Bristol Hippodrome, 5*
This was the second time I've seen this musical, the first being whilst visiting Toronto in Eastern Canada and both times I absolutely fell in love with it. Based on a true story and one of a lesser known nature than the other accounts of the tragic 9/11, this story follows 'the plane people' the group of passengers who found themselves stranded in Gander, a small rural town in New Finland and the community of islanders who came together to look after them. The musical numbers are beautiful, I really love the folk like feel to them namely- ' Welcome to the Rock' and 'Me and the Sky'- two superb numbers. The sense of ensemble really makes this piece special, with each cast member playing several roles- its really musical story telling at its best. Fabulous choreography aswell, particularly the movement sequences set on the plane- really cleverly done. A very well crafted script with styles of verbatim and a careful mix of emotion and humor- the 'New Finlander' song with the kissing of the fish really bought the house down. A stunning and unique piece of theatre!
